More info on Emotional Eating
People don’t just eat when they’re hungry. Social eating is one way people celebrate and commiserate. People also eat when we’re sad, lonely, bored, or anxious. Eating for comfort, without hunger, is called emotional eating.
Why Emotional Eating?
It’s very common for people to turn to sweet, fatty or salty foods for a quick feeling of pleasure. In combination with a balanced diet, the occasional treat is fine.
However, repeated eating of ‘junk’ foods in response to unpleasant feelings, as opposed to genuine hunger, may signify an emotional issue waiting to be addressed. An emotional eater will consume large quantities of food, usually unhealthy ‘junk’ foods, often alone. As there is no hunger to satisfy, bingeing can result.
Emotional eating is present in both sexes. It can very often start in childhood.
As an adult, feeling persecuted could automatically lead someone to turn to the ‘bad’ foods they were denied as children.
A child is even more likely to become an emotional eater later in life when food is used as compensation for the bad feelings associated with life’s hard knocks. The link between feeling victimised and eating can create life-long patterns of emotional eating.
The feelings of fullness and well-being that occur immediately after a session of emotional eating are temporary. Eating doesn’t treat or resolve the cause of unhappy feelings. The long-term consequences include emotional instability and, very often, obesity.
What Do We Eat?
Foods that give comfort, whether to sustain good feelings or banish unhappiness, are usually unhealthy when consumed in large portions. According to research from the University of Illinois, the number one comfort food for both sexes is ice cream. Favourites then break down by gender. For men, comfort foods are pizza, casserole and steak. For women, it’s biscuits and chocolate. Both sexes prefer potato chips when bored.
Chocolate is well-known for its pleasure-giving attributes, and this may be based in science. The central opioid system, and the neurotransmitter dopamine, are both activated by chocolate consumption, resulting in feelings of pleasure and peace.
How To Help Yourself
If you are an emotional eater, your feelings need to be treated with sensitivity. Telling yourself to stop, or to eat less, does not identify the issues that cause the eating in the first place.
A place to start is to give up judging food morally. Instead of good foods, you can have ‘everyday’ foods. Instead of bad or naughty foods, try having ‘occasional’ foods. Removing the associations between food and behaviour also helps lessen the emotions attached.
Thinking of food as feast or famine can also support emotional eating. A healthy diet isn’t ‘ruined’ by one packet of chips. Nobody is perfect, and learning moderation can help you understand and accept your limitations.
Take time to recognise the feelings that send you to the fridge. List the emotions that trigger the urge, and think of other ways to cope other than eating. Feelings are normal, and healthy, if they are in response to real issues.
If your feelings and emotions seem to have no basis in reality, or persist even after the cause is long gone, you may need to seek professional help. Your doctor or local health centre can recommend a counsellor or psychologist.

Eating Disorders = Anorexia. Or does it?

Awareness, woooooo! We all love a bit of awareness of an evening. Here I discuss the danger of synonyms… I realise that I also indulge in a little terminological inexactitude during this video – for example, using ‘anorexia’ and ‘anorexia nervosa’ interchangeably – that was just because, within the context of EDs, ‘anorexia’ serves as a shortcut which everybody will understand, and I see that as pragmatic rather than imprecise!

Beautiful Skin – Types of Skin Disorders
Any condition or injury affecting the skin’s layers is considered as a skin disorder. There are many types of skin problems, and for years scientists have studied how these come up and how to best treat them.
Everyone can be affected by skin disorders and unfortunately, age and gender have no any bearing on who will be affected by these conditions. Learning about skin problems and how they can be treated or prevented can be very beneficial for long term skin health.
Skin disorders are typically categorized into five types:
Inflammatory
Viral
Bacterial
Fungal
Cancer
An inflammatory skin disorder is characterized by inflammation and irritation of the skin. One of the most common types of inflammatory skin disorders is acne which is prevalent among teenagers, and sometimes continues on into adulthood. Acne develops due to blockage in the skin follicles. It usually occurs in the face, chest, back, and shoulders. Acne can result to low self esteem, especially among adolescents.
Other types of inflammatory skin disorders include dermatitis or eczema, which is an inflammation of the epidermis, diaper rash, psoriasis which often results in red patches, and rosacea, which is chronic redness of the face.
Viral skin disorders, on the other hand, are caused by viruses like measles, herpes, chicken pox, and warts. Children are usually affected by viral skin disorders, although adults can also be affected especially as a result of unprotected sexual contact.
Chicken pox is one of the most notorious types of viral skin disorder. It is caused by infection of the varicella zoster virus. It is characterized by skin rashes which develop into small and open sores. Patients usually have to wait two to three weeks before the infection flares up.
Bacterial skin disorders develop from the presence of microorganisms which damage the tissues hosting it. Unlike viral skin disorders, bacterial skin disorders are easier to treat since medication like antibiotics are more prevalent and effective.
One type of bacterial skin disorder is folliculitis or more popularly known as Barber’s Itch characterized by inflammation of the hair follicles. It can appear anywhere in the body. Impetigo, meanwhile, is another type which is recognized by scabs found on arms, legs, and face. It is usually prevalent among children although adults, especially those who play contact sports, can be affected.
Fungal skin infections result from development of microorganisms living off dead skin. Although they can multiply easily, this type of skin infection is easy to treat. Some of the types of fungal infections include ringworm, athlete’s foot, and candida. Over the counter skin treatments are available to cure most fungal skin infections.
Skin cancer is considered the most serious type of skin disorder. It results from various risk factors like genetic predisposition or too much ultraviolet ray exposure. The epidermis is usually affected by skin cancer, thus a tumor is likely to develop. Some of the more common types of skin cancer are melanoma, squamous cell and basal cell cancer.
Anyone should be conscious of any discomfort or swelling on their skin as it can lead to early diagnosis and treatment of any type of skin disorder.
